Bamboo is a natural, durable, and relatively inexpensive material that is suitable for building pigsty. However, to ensure the safety and comfort of pigs, you need to pay attention to some points during construction.

1. Preparation

  • Bamboo: Choose old bamboo with a large, sturdy stem, about 4-6cm in diameter. Avoid using young bamboo or bamboo that is infested with termites.
  • Lanyards: Parachute rope, nylon rope, or thin steel wire to tie the bamboo segments together.
  • Knife, saw: For cutting bamboo.
  • Other materials: Wire mesh or wooden σαν (for the roof), feeding and drinking troughs for pigs.

2. Conduct

  1. Make the main frame: Cut the bamboo segments to a length equal to the desired size of the barn. Combine the bamboo sections together to form a rectangle for the base and pillars to build the barn body. Fasten the joints with wires.
  2. Making partitions: Use smaller bamboo sticks to form partitions inside the barn, helping to divide the rest area and excrete (excretion - bai jie) for the pigs.
  3. Making the floor of the barn:
    • Method 1: Use smaller bamboo sticks evenly spaced to form σαν (san) floor for the pigs to stand. Note留ý (liu yì - note) so that the distance between the bamboo sticks is wide enough for the pig's waste to seep down.
    • Method 2: Make the floor with woven bamboo.
  4. Roof: Roofing with coconut leaves, cold corrugated iron or wire mesh to shelter the pigs from the sun and rain.
  5. Feeding and drinking compartments: Install feeding troughs and drinking troughs in the barn, ensuring easy access for pigs.

3. Notes

  • Choose a place to build a cool, tall barn, to avoid flooding.
  • Make sure the barn is the right size for the number of pigs.
  • The edges of the barn need to be smoothed to avoid scratching the pigs.
  • Clean the barn regularly to ensure a clean living environment for pigs.
