In 2024, New Year's Day is approaching and my family is starting to prepare for a meaningful traditional holiday season again. In the last days of the year, the processing of banh hung becomes a typical culture of Tet.
On the morning of the 2nd Tet, the desk in the house was cleared to serve as a traditional place to experience the wrapping of rice cakes. My family gathered at the desk, each taking on a specific role in the process. My father, with skillful hands, took care of rolling up the banana leaves and cutting the cake into just the right pieces. My mother, with her meticulousness and culinary skills, was responsible for the preparation of the filling from pork, glutinous rice, and spices. Meanwhile, my brother and I were in charge of wrapping banana leaves and using an umbrella rope to tie the cake tightly.
This is not only a fun activity but also an opportunity for my family to get together, share stories and memories. The feeling of immersing yourself in the atmosphere of spring is coming really makes Tet Day more special than ever.
After the cakes are sealed, they are taken out to cook. Meanwhile, my house also became more vibrant with décor. The ancestral altar is decorated for good luck and fortune for the new year, while the living room is decorated with fresh peach blossoms and apricot trees. Laughter and music emanate from the house, creating a cozy and happy space.
Tet 2024 is not only an occasion to celebrate tradition but also an opportunity for my family and I to create memorable memories together, and welcome a new year full of hope and luck.
